The Lord’s light penetrates the human spirit, exposing every hidden motive. Unfailing love and faithfulness protect the king; his throne is made secure through love. The glory of the young is their strength; the gray hair of experience is the splendor of the old. Proverbs 20:27-29
I love this set of verses, they set the tone for the three L’s of abundant living. To live is Christ, but to die is gain as Paul says in Philippians 1:21. Light, love, and life are all about living the right way and being an inspiration to others. As Paul states further, God wanted him to remain alive to help all the newer Christians gain a foothold in their lives. When we are filled with the Holy Spirit, love has a tendency to overflow into others’ lives. Paul was a great example of love overflowing. Let’s look at our first L, which is light.
The first verse talks about light penetrating the human spirit, exposing every hidden motive. There are verses in Psalms that talk about God being clothed in light. God is not only glorious in this way, but His light penetrates our hearts, we cannot hide anything from God. The goal here is to fill you with light and not have any hidden agenda. Light has everything to do with our attitude. Have you ever heard someone say John Smith has a sunny disposition? Nothing makes you more attractive than a great attitude. A great attitude happens when we are thankful. An attitude of gratitude is so powerful to having a life of abundant living.
Our next verse talks about the next L in abundant living and that is love. This is the most important part of abundant living because it all has to do with an action and a choice. Love is not warm fuzzies you feel when you “fall in love” with someone. Unfailing love and faithfulness is unconditional love. This is what makes marriages and relationships last long. Love consecrates, it allows people to have a faithfulness to someone or God. Favor with man and God comes along. When you no longer allow conditions on your love, you find freedom to love in a most godly way. Light penetrates your heart to give you a great attitude; love takes that attitude and consecrates you to faithfulness to God and to others and people will be faithful to you.
The last verse is all about life, how useful our life is to God. We all have hidden godly potential within us that once tapped is an unstoppable force for good. This verse to me is saying the young have strength to get things done, but the old have wisdom to keep the main thing the main thing. Life invigorates people. When you allow light to penetrate, and love to consecrate, then life will invigorate other lives. You will be a life-giving person, invigorating all around your sphere of influence and Jesus will be seen in your life.
Light penetrates for a great attitude, that attitude sets you up for love that consecrates. Love will give you that devotion through consecration and finally life will invigorate. Let the three L’s of living work their way into your heart and you can never go wrong with Jesus and what He said about having life and having it more abundantly.
