Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil.  Then after the battle you will still be standing firm.  Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth…  Ephesians 6:13-14

Last week we discussed the missing piece of armor, this week we will start discussing the armor pieces.  The first as you can see by the above verse is the belt of truth.  In other translations of the Bible it has gird your loins with the belt of truth.  Girding your loins in biblical times meant to take ones lower garments and put them together with the belt to make it easier to move around during battle.  It would also give a kind of protection for the private area during battle.  A belt is for holding things up and keeping things together.  This is a perfect example Paul has here of how truth should be viewed.  Love light armor has to have truth to hold things together.  Notice truth is the very first piece of love light armor that Paul describes.  Let’s look at some different ideas of what truth is and how we should always have that belt on us every day.

Truth as I mentioned above holds things together.  Lying or telling part of the truth, which is still lying, divides people.  There is nothing that falsehood can do to hold anything together; in fact, it’s a quick road to regret.  My definition of politics is he who tells the best lies wins.  It’s really a sad fact that we have an oxymoron when we say honest politician.  I don’t know about you, but what a breath of fresh air we could have in this country if we actually had politicians that could say they made a mistake and own up to it.  The respect and support they would get would be unbelievable.  Truth seems to take a back seat to deceit these days.  It’s best way to go though, because it holds people together.  Love without truth is not love, but a sham.

Not only does truth hold things together, but it makes your walk through life easier.  You don’t have to remember the lie when you tell the truth.  The truth is easy, It’s a light burden.  If you make a habit out of lying to people, the truth will eventually come out.  Freedom is found with truth, you cannot have any kind of freedom if you are lying and walking around in falsehood.  The enemy likes to tell us if we hold back the truth things will be better.  The lie will be shown in time and if that happens it makes thing worst.  You have to face it head on and that is a much better way of dealing with negative circumstances.

That is the lower part of the body dealing with freedom of movement with your walk, the belt also supports the next blog post, which is the breastplate of righteousness.  Being truthful is righteous behavior and is a big part of love.  Any relationship you have deals with telling truth to those you really love.  Being truthful in all you do will be a very attractive thing.  People honor those that are truthful because it’s a breath of fresh air.  Truth has a way of clearing the air.  Brutal honesty is not the way to go.  If we are to love, hard truth should be not a way to tear down, but to build up and be encouraging despite a negative truth being told.

The belt of truth holds things together so that we can walk in freedom and be righteous in nature to those relationships that are important to us.  Truth is freedom from guilt, freedom of regret, freedom from stress.  Truth does set us free; it’s the bright love light armor center that holds things together.
