Love Light Armor of God Part 1: What About My Back?

A final word: Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.  Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil.  For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.

Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil.  Then after the battle you will still be standing firm.  Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness.  For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared.  In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil.  Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion.  Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere.  Ephesians 6:10-18

This is probably the one of the most written and preached on pieces of scripture ever.  It’s really one of my favorites to be honest.  I am sure I blogged on it before a couple of years ago.  God has given me, I hope, a fresh perspective on this scripture to share with you.  Let’s talk about God and His armor.  Psalm 104:2 says that God is clothed in light.  God’s armor is light.  What causes that light to shine forth?  God’s love makes it shine forth, His glory and majesty shines forth because of His great love.  If you go on and read that Psalm you will discover how much love shines out from God to the earth and to us.  His armor is love light.  He passed that same armor on to us when Adam and Eve were created.  The Bible says we were made in His image, so that would mean Adam and Eve were clothed in light.  The love light armor that Adam and Eve had on like God came off when they gave into the sin that was presented to them by the serpent.  Please note that they were forbidden to eat from the tree of knowledge, not the tree of life.  That’s why when they sinned the love that shone around them left them and they were naked.  When you accept Christ as you savior you gain that love light armor back and you have to put it on every day.  Just as Adam and Eve had a choice, we have a choice every day whether we put on the armor of light or walk in our flesh.

I thought I would write this blog in one setting, but I see this becoming pretty long so I will do it in several parts.  Before we dig into the above scripture I need to lay some more ground work.  The armor that Paul is talking about is an open back armor.  Back in the time of Paul, the armor that he would be looking at would be Roman armor.  Roman armor had no protection in the back.  I would think the logic of not having any protection to the back would be to keep your men facing the battle and not running from it.  If they show their back, they would be open to an blade or a well-placed arrow.  You can think of it if you are facing a barking dog.  You don’t turn your back to a dog that is being aggressive toward you because that is a sign of weakness.  He will attack you if you turn your back.  Metaphorically speaking aside if we turn our back on the spiritual battle we face every day, we leave ourselves open for the enemy to do some damage in our lives.  Today’s blog will focus on the one piece of missing armor, the back.

The back not being protected is for two reasons.  The first reason is we should be facing the battle before us.  We cannot be on autopilot when it comes to spiritual warfare.  We have to see the battle in front of us so that we can stand our ground.  Just like the dog barking at you, you have to show him that you own the ground in front of you.  How do we have our front and sides protected, we will get into that over the next few weeks.  The stronger you are on the front and the sides the more the enemy will try to attack you from behind.

The next reason you have no armor in the back is because that’s where teamwork comes in.  Teamwork makes the dream work as John Maxwell so eloquently put.  Your brother or sister protects your back.  The third and most important element besides you and your brother or sister is God.

A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer.  Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken.  Ecclesiastics 4:12

You cannot be attacked from behind when you have that much behind you.  That’s why we all should have a gender related accountability partner in our life.  If you’re a man you should have another man in your life that can tell you when something is wrong.  You can share the struggles you are facing.  The same thing if you are a woman.  The reason for gender related is because a man will understand more than a woman if you are a man and visa versa.  David’s failure with Bathsheba would not have happened had he found another close friend like Jonathan to keep him accountable.

Our back is not exposed if we allow God to back us up and provide godly friend’s to back us up.  If we have that then we can be more than conquers in this spiritual battle of life.
