Psalm 119:105-112 Nun
Your word is a lamp to guide my feet
and a light for my path.
I’ve promised it once, and I’ll promise it again:
I will obey your righteous regulations.
I have suffered much, O Lord;
restore my life again as you promised.
Lord, accept my offering of praise,
and teach me your regulations.
My life constantly hangs in the balance,
but I will not stop obeying your instructions.
The wicked have set their traps for me,
but I will not turn from your commandments.
Your laws are my treasure;
they are my heart’s delight.
I am determined to keep your decrees
to the very end.
This particular Psalm is very famous, quoted, and sung quite often. What I love about it is the Psalmist makes it clear that God’s word is a light to guide our feet. To clearly see where you are going in the dark you have to first see where you are going and that is what God’s word does for us. What’s interesting is while God’s word is guiding our feet we are also spreading the light for others to see. Light is always visible in a darkened area, so others can see the light that comes off you. Light does many things for us, the Psalmist hits on several here in the passage.
The first thing light does for us is it restores life. Light promises to give us life. A great example is a sunflower. Whenever the sun is out and seen the sunflower follows it across the sky. When it grows dark, the sunflower is looking down at the ground. Light does the same for us, when we see it we are alive and the people around us are alive and affected as well. There is no such thing as darkness, just absence of light.
The next thing light brings us is joy. Light can flood our soul with joy. As we read God’s word we can recognize how much He loves us and cares about us even though we may not deserve it. As I mentioned in a couple of blogs ago the power of the pass it on is where the overflowing joy goes. We have to pass that light on to others so their world become bright and shiny and gratitude happens.
Light keeps our path determined. We can go forward with determination of the goal God has planned for us. We start to have godly dreams when we delve into God’s word. When we understand His light better, we live better lives. In fact, we want to follow of what God has planned for us. The determination keeps us secure in knowing where our next step is going. We are not blindly moving in a darkened world, we are finding our way with God’s holy light of His word. God gives us a determined purpose and plan for our lives, that godly dream I mentioned before. He gives us vision for what is in front of us with His light.
The Psalmist outlined three aspects of light for us. The first is how light restores life. How light brings us joy when we follow God’s commandments and follow His lead. The last point is that light gives us a determined purpose and drives us on to that goal of the godly dream. Light is easy to follow, just make sure your lamp is lit.
