The Essential 100 day 100: Revelation 21 and 22: The River and Tree Of Life and Eternal Light

1 Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb2 down the middle of the great street of the city. On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations.3 No longer will there be any curse. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city, and his servants will serve him.4 They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads.5 There will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light. And they will reign for ever and ever. Revelation 22:1-5

This 100th day marks the end of my 100 day reading plan that I stuck to for the last 100 days starting January 1st.  I am not bragging, I just realize that I really do have time to blog and read a passage of scripture in my crazy scheduled life.  Not only does this mark the end of my reading plan, but it’s the very end of the bible itself.  The above scripture is what jumped out at me.  One of the first things mentioned here is the river with the water of life in it.  I have made several mentions on the river of life over the last 100 days and want to talk about it some more.  The river of life begins with love and ends with self-control.  It’s I believe all of the fruits of the spirit rolled into one.  Self-control is an important component of love.  We ultimately want God to be in control of our lives, but we have to make the righteous steps to get to that place.  Some might think self-control as some kind of being in control of your life and controlling everything around you.  That is not the godly self-control I am talking about, I am talking about having a sense of righteous behavior in your life.  Making righteous decisions sets you up to have God in control of your life.  You are surrendering your ungodly life to the godly life God has planned for you.

The tree of life is on both sides of the river of life.  It brings healing to the nations.  On many blogs I have pointed out that giving life giving affirmations to people is a step toward healing their soul.  Having a positive attitude toward people and thinking of them as higher than yourself is key in lifting someone up out of whatever has brought them down.  Our speech, our demeanor can be the fruit from the tree of life to these people that are lost in themselves.  So, pluck that fruit off the branch and serve it up to someone who needs it today.

The last part of this set of verses talks about the never ending light that will be cast by God and Jesus.  There will no longer be darkness or shadows with the pure light of God.  The dark things will be outside of the city walls.  The sun will no longer be needed.  This light can be used today as you are a positive influence around your sphere of influence.  My calling is to inspire others to change, your calling is to inspire others to change.  Let’s be the inspiration God has called us to be and change our sphere of influence around us.  Be the church He has called us to be.  I so enjoyed blogging this reading plan.  I pray that many got blessed by these posts.  I will go back to normal blogging about 3 times weekly or as the Spirit leads me.

  1. Hi David. You certainly live the life-affirming love you’re talking about. You have been so encouraging to me. I totally agree when you say love comes from self-control. It’s easy to give our lives over to God when we feel safe, truel seen, and unconditionally loved by God.

Thanks so much. Part of loving ourselves the way God loves us is taking that first step of self-control, like the Prodical Son took the first step out of the negative enviorment he was in. When we do that, God like the Prodical son’s father will come runniing. 🙂
