Second Mile Week One

Jeremiah 17:7-8  But blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in Him.  He will be like a tree planted by the water that sends roots by the stream.  It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green.   It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.

Second mile is a leadership class for 8 weeks that my church The Life Church Of Memphis is now doing.  I am a part of the very first class that has 151 leaders.  Over the next 8 weeks I will devote my blog to what stood out to me during these classes that I can highlight.  We had 3 great speakers tonight, Pastor John (our lead Pastor), Pastor Dan and Pastor Mundo.  There’s nothing like great leaders poring into future great leaders.

Pastor John shared with us three concepts about leadership.

  1. Leadership is about being a great follower.  That is so true, if you think about it some of the greatest leaders you can think of came from humble beginnings.  They had to learn how to follow.  If you know how to follow then when you are a leader you can better lead by example.
  2. You have to learn to grow your own life.  I think this speaks about having a teachable spirit and an open mind to new things.  If you are not seeking the next step in life how are you ever going to move forward?
  3. Serve.  Be a servant and serve other people.  Being others focused.

Pastor Dan had some awesome thoughts as well.  The concept of Second Mile comes from the Matthew 5:41 where it says if an enemy makes you go one mile, go a second mile with him as well.  That goes against everything we have been taught, we should be resisting that.  What it comes down to is the second miles is a lifestyle.  When you get to the second mile there is less traffic around you.  Not everyone is going to make it to the second mile.  People with the “do I have to?” spirit in them are those that are not living a second mile life.  Second milers have a can do attitude.  If something needs to be done no matter what it is they are right there leading the way to get it done.  Having a second mile lifestyle looks like the above verse.  Getting planted in right place makes all the difference between life or death.  When we step out and live a second mile life, we have to trust God that what we are going to do is going to produce fruit.  A second mile lifestyle means being not focused on you, others focused.
