The Essential 100 Day 87: 1 Tiimothy 6:3-21: True Love

6 But godliness with contentment is great gain.7 For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it.8 But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that.9 Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction.10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. 1 Timothy 6:6-10

What is true love?  That is a question that has baffled many a song writer, philosopher and poet alike.  All they have to do is look in the book of love, the Bible.  This is God’s love letter to us, He shows us His love through the suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus.  Now that is true love, godly love, a love that is unconditional.  Love is not a feeling you get in the pit of your stomach when you see that special someone, that’s infatuation, love is an action, a choice.  Here Paul is talking to Timothy about some people in the faith making money on Jesus.  It still happens to this day.  The people that do that are motivated by the money and how much they can make.  Sure they may have started the ministry with the good intentions of loving people, but somehow the enemy has crept in and changed that motivation.  This is why we always need to keep our church leaders in constant prayer.  True love is focusing on Christ and how much He loves people and died for them.  We need to do the same, focus on people and love our church by serving it anyway we can.  Not to be motivated by how we look in whatever serving capacity we do, but making true love the motivating factor.  Jesus said it Himself, love God, love people.  That’s all we have to do to begin to understand the great love God has for us, the true love.  A sacrificial love that doesn’t say how can I best be served, but how can I serve you, how can I make your life better?  True love is loving God with all your heart soul and mind and living well balanced life worthy of your calling to love people and to love yourself.
