15 The people were waiting expectantly and were all wondering in their hearts if John might possibly be the Messiah.16 John answered them all, “I baptize you with water. But one who is more powerful than I will come, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.17 His winnowing fork is in his hand to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.” John 3:15-17
Today’s reading is John the Baptist preaching about Jesus coming. I think John spent years talking about Jesus before he baptized Him before His 40 days in the wilderness. These three verses talk about how we will be baptized by the Holy Spirit after Jesus’ death. The fire John talks about is the testing of everyday. Everyday we are put to the test, we have to stand and be courageous in this life. We can’t back down because of fear, we have to have faith in the One who taught us to do the right thing. Life is not always going to be sunshine and blue skies, but on the other side of the clouds there is always blue skies and sunshine. We have to make the focus God and connect with what He is doing in this world. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to be caught on the blunt end of the Holy Spirit. I don’t want to be burnt chaff. If you stand and do the right thing and are courageous in this life you are on the right path. You are on the straight path.
