The Essential 100 Day 40: 2 Kings 25:1-30: Independence

25 In the seventh month, however, Ishmael son of Nethaniah, the son of Elishama, who was of royal blood, came with ten men and assassinated Gedaliah and also the men of Judah and the Babylonians who were with him at Mizpah.26 At this, all the people from the least to the greatest, together with the army officers, fled to Egypt for fear of the Babylonians. 2 Kings 25:25-26

I selected these verses because they show me that no matter how bad things can get we still desire to be independent.  It’s in our nature to want to be independent, we don’t want to have to rely on other people to survive day to day.  That may be why the Israelites kept turning from God because they wanted to do their own thing.  In these verses Ishmael rose up and killed the traitor  Gedaliah, who pretty much bowed to the Babylonians.  Before these verses the forces of  Nebuchadnezzar surrounded the city of Jerusalem and laid siege to it.  They could neither leave or come.  They eventually gave in and let the Babylonians take over.  God lifted his protection from them and allowed them to be taken into captivity.  The Israelites did not stay true to God, they turned away from Him and worshiped the Baals.  It’s interesting, but in the christian life we have liberty, independence, but have to depend on God to show us our path.  We are free from sin, but depend on God for our lives to count for something.  The only one we should depend on is God; we are independent from everything else because of our dependance on God.
