27 At noon Elijah began to taunt them. “Shout louder!” he said. “Surely he is a god! Perhaps he is deep in thought, or busy, or traveling. Maybe he is sleeping and must be awakened.”28 So they shouted louder and slashed themselves with swords and spears, as was their custom, until their blood flowed.29 Midday passed, and they continued their frantic prophesying until the time for the evening sacrifice. But there was no response, no one answered, no one paid attention. 1 Kings 18:27-19
I like this scripture, it shows how crazy it is to think that there are other gods out there. Elijah was instructed to show the people that there was only one true God. He set up a meeting between himself and 450 of the Baal prophets. The contest was whoever could cause their sacrifice to catch fire without lighting it themselves was the one true God. So the Baal prophets were trying to get Baal to light up their sacrifice and were not met with success. Of course our God lit Elijah’s sacrifice and burned up everything including all the water that was dumped on it. Today we put other gods in our lives in the form of distractions that can keep us from focusing on the one God. It may be a habit, a relationship or even an attitude. These things give us a moment of enjoyment, but are not as fulfilling as following Jesus on whatever quest He wants us to do in our lives. That path will be met with opposition along the way. You will be attacked, but knowing that you are on the right path, God will give you amazing favor over your opposition. Jezebel wanted to kill Elijah, but God was giving Elijah favor over his enemy’s. Remember no weapon formed against you will prosper. You serve a big and awesome God that can handle anything thrown in your path that He has set before you to follow. Let the attacks from the enemy light a fire under you to work even harder to get God’s dream for you life accomplished.
