The Essential 100 Day 37: 1 Kings 2, and 3:1-28: Discernment

46 Then the king gave the order to Benaiah son of Jehoiada, and he went out and struck Shimei down and he died.
The kingdom was now established in Solomon’s hands. 1 Kings 2:46

The second chapter of 1 Kings reads like something out of a Godfather movie.  Solomon is establishing his throne and in doing so had to kill a bunch of people that were instrumental, during David’s reign, in messing with his kingdom.  God wanted Solomon to get a good start, so He didn’t want these people that couldn’t be trusted around.  I find it interesting that the lion chaser Benaiah son of Jehoiada was the chief executioner.  Benaiah was David’s head of security and was most noted for his chasing, not running, but chasing after a lion and killing it.  As we see God gave some wise instruction to Solomon and Solomon followed it to the letter.  I think Solomon witnessed the wisdom in all of this and wanted to be able to be wise and discerning in his kingdom, so he asked God for wisdom.  God grants us the same thing with his Holy Spirit that lives in us today.  Maybe not to the degree of Solomon, but we can get discernment from the Holy Spirit.  In fact it’s one of the spiritual gifts God give us.  God is concerned for our paths as He was for Solomon, although as we will see later, Solomon falls away.  We need to stay on the path God has set for us and pray for discernment, so that our steps will not falter and we go along a path we shouldn’t be walking.
