The Essential 100 Day 31: 1 Samuel 1,2, and 3: Persistent Prayer

20 So in the course of time Hannah became pregnant and gave birth to a son. She named him Samuel,t saying, “Because I asked the Lord for him.” 1 Samuel 1:20

The first part of this reading today is about the story of Hannah the mother of the great prophet Samuel.  Her ernest prayer was to have a son; and she told God she would make him God’s own.  He would be consecrated to God.  Eli one of the Levitical priests at the time saw her and thought she was a drunk.  She explained her dilemma of wanting a child so found favor in the eyes of Eli who prayed for her to have a child.  After this she did have a son and named him Samuel, which means, as you see in the scripture above, Because she asked the Lord for him.  Her persistent prayer paid off.  She did as she promised and Samuel grew in favor of God and man.  Sometimes we get stuck with our prayers and expect them to be answered right away.  God wants to build character in us to make us better people.  Sometimes it’s a lesson of patience.  Samuel was named perfectly for the reason he would later on become the prophet of the first King of Israel.  So that prayer on your heart, that dream or goal you may be driving toward, don’t give up on it, because God will not give up on you.
