20 And Joshua set up at Gilgal the twelve stones they had taken out of the Jordan.21 He said to the Israelites, “In the future when your descendants ask their parents, ‘What do these stones mean?’22 tell them, ‘Israel crossed the Jordan on dry ground.’23 For the Lord your God dried up the Jordan before you until you had crossed over. The Lord your God did to the Jordan what he had done to the Red Seat when he dried it up before us until we had crossed over.24 He did this so that all the peoples of the earth might know that the hand of the Lord is powerful and so that you might always fear the Lord your God.” Joshua 4:20-24
These verses I chose because they show an everlasting memorial for what God has done for Israel. We should have reminders about what God has done for us in our lives. I lost 242 pounds and was healed from heart failure and sleep apnea. I no longer take the medication I used to. A friend of mine gave me a memorial to remind me of what God has done in my life. It’s a figure of a face blowing a kiss. It’s to say kissing the past goodbye. Mind you, these are not idols, but reminders of what God has done for us. In this passage God has Joshua do just that, set up a memorial for the Israelites to see for generations to come. We don’t worship these memorials, but look at them as a testimony of the power of God. So if you have gone through something major like the Israelites it’s awesome to have a memorial to remember God’s love and care for you.
