21 By day the Lord went ahead of them in a pillar of cloud to guide them on their way and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so that they could travel by day or night.22 Neither the pillar of cloud by day nor the pillar of fire by night left its place in front of the people. Exodus 13:21-22
The stiff necked Israelites had God provide them with a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night. What a privilege to see the awesomeness of God at work here. It would be a sight just to see both of these things. It doesn’t say anything in the bible about the pillar of fire, but I have a feeling it kept them warm as well. The dessert can get very cold at night. What I find interesting in this story is that they have God in front of them leading them, but behind them is the Egyptian army chasing after them. What they focus on is the little insignificant army behind them instead of the great big God before them. We are a lot like this, our focus is on our problems and how to fix them. We don’t focus on God and know He will help solve all of our problems both big and small. We need to always let go and God will guide us through them. Just as He did the Israelites. He heard their prayers and helped them out with the parting of the Red sea. The Israelites let faith take a break before they walked in between the walls of water. When what they should have been doing is being focused on the pillar of cloud and the pillar of fire.
