3 Then ten of Joseph’s brothers went down to buy grain from Egypt.4 But Jacob did not send Benjamin, Joseph’s brother, with the others, because he was afraid that harm might come to him. Genesis 42:3-4
In Joseph part 3 the story focuses on the brothers that sent him away. I find it interesting that after Joseph’s faked death that there arose a trust issue between Jacob and the 10 brothers. It seems to me Jacob did not trust the brothers to take the youngest Benjamin with them. As you can see in the verses I have up. It’s so important not to play favorites with people and relationships. When we play favorites we are putting conditions on our love. It’s as if you are saying I love this person more because they do this or they don’t do that. Then we compare them with other people. I have to admit I myself have fallen into favoritism. It’s human nature to allow ourselves to pick favorites. The best way to deal with anyone is with unconditional love. Joseph showed this when he had mercy on his brothers. You have to figure that after all these years he had forgiven them for what they did. He had godly win vision and looked ahead and planned what he would do if they ever stood before him. He could not have done that if he did not have the Holy Spirit guiding him to a place of unconditional love. At one point in the story Joseph was weeping. I think he wanted to have the reunion right then, but stayed strong and let the plan go forth to bring the whole family back together. Unconditional love and forgiveness go hand in hand. You can’t have one without the other.
