28 Then the man said, “Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome.” Genesis 32:28
When I read this passage I noticed that fear was one of the main things Jacob was going through. The last time he saw Esau, Esau was talking about killing him. Jacob was so fearful he gathered a large gift for his brother and sent it on ahead. At the same time the fear was happening he was realizing that God had promised him favor. I think we all try to have a human solution to a problem that is best left in God’s hands. Jacob struggled with God because of the fear that was in him. Part of that struggle was letting go of the fear and allowing faith and hope to take root. When it finally did he became a changed man. God gave him a limp to remind him for the rest of his life the struggle he overcame. When we become God’s children, we become overcomers. The bad in our lives will become good, because we struggle and overcome them with God’s help. Today if you are struggling with something, why not allow God to do the thing He does perfect; change the bad to good.
