1 After this, the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision:
“Do not be afraid, Abram.
I am your shield,
your very great reward.” Genesis 15:1
17 When the sun had set and darkness had fallen, a smoking firepot with a blazing torch appeared and passed between the pieces. Genesis 15:17
I love this awesome story of how God shows Abraham what he is going to do for his future. God has a plan that spans 400 years for Abraham. The first verse goes with verse 17. This chapter describes a blood sacrifice to God. The first sacrifice was done by God himself when He made the clothes for Adam and Eve. The blood sacrifice here is a covenant between God and Abraham. When a covenant is done the animals are sacrificed and the parts spread out on the left and the right. The person making the covenant walks through the dead carcasses. What this means is that may what happen to these dead animals happen to me if I break my covenant with you. God never did break this covenant with Abraham, but He did pay the price for our sins and had Jesus’ body broken for us. God always comes through no matter what. God is our shield, our great reward.
