Second Mile Week Two: Serving Excellence
Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:18-20
The best example of a leader is Jesus. The best example of a servant is Jesus. How can we have both? Jesus as always was off the chain when you are dealing with how we are compared to the world. There is no comparison. The calling on my life is to show people how to bring true love and self-control into their lives. The best way to do this is leading with serving excellence in front of you. This week we talked about serving and excellence, but they go hand in hand as was mentioned in the awesome teaching from Pastor Dan and Pastor BJ.
The great commission as quoted in this weeks memory verse is a perfect example of serving excellence. How do we make disciples? By serving people in a most excellent way. How do we do this? By loving them as God loves them. We don’t go into a situation unprepared with a spirit of negativity on our lives. We don’t wait and look for the moment to be offended by someone at church. That is not love. We go in with an open heart ready to receive anyone who comes through the door of our church with a smile and a welcome home look on our face. There is no judgement on looks or how they dress. The only way we can get disciples is by not judging people and just love them the way they are. If something needs to change it will. We are not there to preach death to them, they are not going to respond to that; they will respond to an open heart and a loving disposition. Just loving people is the first step to serving and making disciples.
The next step is putting self-control into the picture. Excellence happens with self-control. Once we start loving people and getting them discipled, then teaching them by example is a most excellent way to keep them strong in the faith. We all have our own sphere of influence and if we are going to affect that sphere of influence we need to be an inspiration to people. The way you are on Sunday should be the same Monday through Saturday. Self-control is a big part of this. Leading by example and living your life in a most excellent way is the best way to teach disciples how to live and grow in their faith. Be the real deal, don’t be fake. Fake does not last. As I have said in prior blogs love and self-control bookend the fruits of the Spirit. If you want to produce fruit in your life and see God using you to make a difference in peoples lives allow love and self-control to be your guide, you will find favor with both God and man.
